A successful week was reported for Japanese yards, with orders for bulk carriers and a tanker. South Korean orders focused on product carriers and tankers. Australia won a large contract for the design and construction of a high-speed catamaran ferry for Denmark. In the naval sector, Turkey has started a programme building its own submarine fleet to replace imported vessels. The long-discussed naval shipbuilding cooperation between France and Italy took another step forward with the award of a major contract. But indications were the European Union will not give fast approval to the major French/Italian yard takeover. In China, the government has approved a huge shipyard merger.
