Efforts to improve maritime environmental protection again helped generate more shipbuilding orders this week. Energy-saving heavy-lift vessels were ordered separately by European and Japanese interests in China. South Korea won large orders for gas carriers and petrochemical carriers. A big Taiwanese container ship order was placed in Japan and Korea. Russian state-backed orders remained brisk, with another major ice-breaker contract placed. The naval sector included signs that the British government will award an order for frigates in September to a British yard consortium while a large U.S. Navy landing vessel order was placed.
