South Korea expanded in U.S. offshore oil and gas platform market with big order this week. This illustrates the determination of Korean yards to fill the gap in the offshore sector following the pullback by yards in Singapore, and also the recovery in offshore orders as crude oil prices rise. Asian shipbuilding orders included a new type of very large gas carrier for LPG and ammonia placed in Japan and container ships in China. Projects to develop shipping and mining in Russia’s Arctic regions also stimulated a series of orders for various vessel types.
