Another dramatic shake-up in the world’s shipbuilding industry was signalled this week as China’s two largest shipyard groups say they plan to merge. Meanwhile, the next stage of the merger of South Korea’s largest two shipyards took another step forward. Big new cruise ship orders were won this week by Finland for two different customers. France is set to win Romania’s order for four corvettes while Spain is re-entering the race to build conventional submarines for India. Chinese yards had a good week with orders for RoPax ferries from Europe and VLCCs, gas carriers, product tankers, chemical tankers, shuttle tankers, and bulk carriers. Korean yards also won orders for VLCCs, aframax tankers, product carriers and a special purpose vessel.
