South Korean yards won orders worth billions of dollars this week, with gas carriers and environmentally friendly ships again driving demand. Gas carriers for US$874.7 million were reportedly won for Qatar while other large gas carrier orders from other customers were also revealed. Korean yards warn their capacity for more gas-carrier construction is running out after the recent order surge. A US$2.5 billion deal for green container ships for a European shipping company is set to be shared by Chinese and South Korean yards. A US$1 billion deal for large container ships is being negotiated by a yard in Japan, with a lack of newbuilding capacity in South Korea and China bringing Japanese shipbuilders back into the picture. A Middle Eastern customer also ordered gas carriers in China.
