Record-high steel prices are holding back shipbuilding orders, as over 100 Chinese steel mills have raised prices. But Chinese and Korean yards still booked some decent contracts in the past week. European customers were behind orders for tankers and container ships placed in China. Korean orders included product carriers, gas carriers and container ships. The naval sector saw a frigate order worth over US$500 million. A European country announced the start of a tender to build naval supply tankers which will not be reserved for its own yards.
