The German navy has awarded its largest naval vessel construction order ever to a Dutch yard, a controversial move after a European Union-wide tender aimed at reducing the price of the ships. German yards will undertake part of the work but will not take the leading role. Also in Germany, a large container ship order is being planned. Chinese yards achieved a decent volume of newbuilding orders this week including very large ethane carriers, bulk carriers and heavy lift carriers. A big gas carrier deal was also reported in South Korea. Meanwhile, the South Korean government quietly started a scheme to provide state loan guarantees for small- and medium-sized shipbuilders.
