A decent flow of orders was reported as placed or under discussion in China and South Korea this week with gas carriers and environmentally friendly vessels again leading the way. Market talk included a US$300 million gas carrier deal set to be placed in China. A tanker ready to use ammonia as fuel and bulk carriers were among orders in China. In South Korea, dual-fuel very large gas carriers and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers were among contracts. India won an unusual order to export a ferry to South America. A more optimistic view of the outlook for global shipbuilding was taken by the world’s largest shipyard group which plans to win US$14.9 billion in new ship orders in 2021.
