South Korea ended 2019 with some very large orders, including a welcome but rare deal for a large offshore platform. Observers say the outlook for Korean shipbuilders is likely to remain difficult in 2020 as increasing orders for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector are not enough to compensate for the depressed level of offshore oil and gas contracts. But more gas carrier were again ordered and environmental protection and increased use of LNG and electric propulsion continued to be a major subject in shipbuilding this week. Smaller vessels including dredgers and inland waterways craft are set to receive environmentally friendly propulsion. In the naval sector, a major order for patrol vessels is looming in Malaysia.
