China won a series of container ship orders this week, with some shipping companies expecting container demand to recover quickly. South Korean orders included contracts in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier and oil tanker sectors. A troubled European yard won a ferry order placed by the yard’s owner. Furthermore a European project to develop a hydrogen ferry was revealed. One European Government is planning to order research vessels to help its yards find work. Ships with environmentally friendly engines using alternative fuels now account for over a quarter of the total world shipbuilding order book by tonnage, analysts said.
