Mainstream merchant shipbuilding orders in China and South Korea remained relatively slow this week, with continued uncertainty in the trade war between the United States and China restraining new investment decisions by ship owners. Gas carrier orders were reported in Korea and Japan, an LNG carrier project was reported in China. Environmental protection continued to provide the impetus for newbuilding projects, with a new ferry order looming from Finland. A tug powered by electricity was ordered in the Netherlands and a new Japanese project for a tanker with electric propulsion was announced. The naval and defence sector remained brisk. Canada announced a new tender for its coastguard while Germany revealed advanced plans for new naval supply vessels. A major aircraft carrier refit order was placed in the United States.
