The world economic slowdown again depressed newbuilding orders this week. South Korean won contracts for medium-range product tankers and an environmentally friendly ferry. Chinese yards won a series of orders mostly for smaller vessels including bulk carriers and tankers. A project was revealed in Russia to order icebreaking container ships. The naval sector was active. France looks set to resume negotiations about a large corvette order for Romania. Korean yards have started bidding to build destroyers for the Korean navy.
