Container ship contracts worth over US$1.6 billion were shared by yards in South Korea and Japan this week, with environmentally friendliness of new ships a key issue. A successful week for Chinese yards included orders for container ships and vehicle carriers. But the latest figures from China confirm that new ship orders in early 2022 are down strongly compared to the boom year 2021. In the naval sector, shipbuilding is expected to be a large part of Germany’s 100 billion euro programme of special defence spending following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
