Chinese shipyards had another excellent week, with large orders awarded or in the pipeline. China is close to winning an order for container ships worth over USD 1 billion from Europe. Orders reported from China this week included container ships, bulk carriers, car carriers, specialised wind farm freighters and a tanker. Orders from South Korea include gas tankers and product carriers. An Asian shipping group is also planning a container ship order worth up to USD 975 million. The South Korean Government is planning new state assistance for shipyards. The latest problem facing Korean shipyards is a planned increase in steel prices for shipbuilding, which could affect the profitability of shipbuilding orders placed in the past.
