South Korean yards continued their strong start to the year with a series of large orders. Deals included container ships, product carriers and LNG carriers. South Korean shipbuilders won most merchant shipping newbuilding orders placed worldwide in the first quarter of 2022, winning over half of contracts placed globally, new figures show. China won orders for gas carriers in the first stage of a huge newbuilding programme planned by a Middle Eastern country. New environment-friendly designs dominated orders for smaller vessels including tugs and offshore support craft. The U.S. has imposed more sanctions on Russian shipbuilding following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
