Some large newbuilding orders were placed in Asia this week despite the continued global investment uncertainty caused by the fighting in Ukraine. A US$494 million contract for container ships with LNG propulsion was placed in South Korea with a European container shipping group said to be behind part of the deal. Chinese orders also included container ships placed by European customers. Turkey is set to win an order for a ferry after a European tender. Moves to improve environmental friendliness of shipping continued to generate a steady flow of contracts for vessels worldwide, with projects this week including electrically powered ferries for Europe.
