Very large orders were again reported in Asia this week as the global shipping industry recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. Dual-fuel propulsion in new vessels remains a central requirement from customers. China won billions of dollars of contracts for container ships and bulk carriers, with one yard especially reporting massive orders. Deals for LPG carriers and product carriers were among other Chinese contracts. Container ship orders continue to roll in for South Korean yards, which again announced hefty contracts. A share of ship designs for rivals has also been proposed to achieve approval of a merger to create the world’s largest shipbuilding group.
