This week, newbuilding markets were quieter overall than usual, with the coronavirus crisis causing a noticeable slowdown in Chinese economic activity. China had extended its Lunar new year holiday period which caused a further reduction in shipbuilding work. Environmentally friendly propulsion continued to be a major theme in shipbuilding markets. Poland won another order for a ferry from Canada. A new type of hybrid-powered self-discharging bulk carrier was ordered in the Netherlands. Another car carrier with liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion was contracted in Japan and electric inland waterways passenger vessels have been announced for Thailand. Meanwhile, Japan is continuing its moves in the World Trade Organisation against alleged state shipbuilding support in South Korea.
