A healthy flow of new orders was seen in the biggest Asian shipbuilding countries this week. Billion-dollar orders for container ships and bulk carriers were reported in China. These included deals for 24,000-TEU container ships, among the biggest in the world. More Korean success was reported in the gas tanker, container ship and product carrier sectors, continuing an excellent start to the year for South Korean yards. Environmentally friendly gas-powered gas carriers of a new type were ordered in Japan. But bad news also came this week for Asian yards with cancellation of orders for ten VLCC oil tankers.
