The Lunar new year holiday period in Asia generally depressed the level of newbuilding activity in Asian yards this week, but billion dollar orders were placed in South Korea on Thursday as work resumed. Korean yards won major contracts including LNG carriers and container ships. Chinese shipbuilders still reported orders for container ships, bulk carriers and tankers. A furniture maker has ordered its own container ship in China because of dissatisfaction with poor services and high prices in global logistics services. In Europe, a tender to build large ferries is expected to be issued this year while a European yard also won a ferry order from Asia.
