The normally quiet shipbuilding market in early January saw some large deals reported. South Korea won major orders for gas carriers Italy ordered passenger ferries in China, while Chinese yards also won contracts including for chemical tankers and petroleum product carriers. Poland won an order for a specialist Arctic vessel. Japan won deals for two RoPax ferries. The naval sector was busy, with signs Brazil’s long-delayed US$2 billion frigate order is set to be signed and some large U.S. naval modernisation contracts placed. The Dutch navy is also ordering a supply vessel. But the outlook for 2020 given by the biggest yards in South Korea was not very positive, with only unchanged newbuilding orders expected this year compared to 2019.
