The usually quiet period between Christmas and the new year saw major shipbuilding orders placed both in the merchant and naval sectors. A cruise ship order was confirmed in Norway while a Croatian yard won a welcome deal for the hull of a cruise vessel. South Korea won orders for container ships and tankers, while Singapore won welcome new offshore platform contracts. Orders were placed in Japan for ferries and bulk carriers powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Destroyers for Saudi Arabia were ordered from a U.S. yard consortium while another massive U.S. Navy design deal for nuclear submarines was placed. A large Canadian coast guard order for icebreakers is also on the horizon.
