Merchant newbuilding activity was relatively quiet in the usual lull between Christmas and the new year, but South Korean yards started 2022 with a series of orders worth over US$1.3 billion. South Korea won a US$203 million gas carrier order and China reported deals for container ships. U.S. yards are being sought to build inland waterways container ships. The naval sector was active, with South Korea signing a US$556 million corvette order with an Asian customer. A Middle Eastern country also announced plans to order frigates.
